It is July and for us South Africans that means we are banning together to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day on the 18th of July. He was and still is a great inspiration to South Africans. He fought for social justice, peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity. He stood up against poverty and we should continue to build upon the legacy he left us. It is easy to look at one’s own life and get caught up in your own problems, but we must remember that there is always someone else who has less than us. Perhaps this month we can all focus on helping others, even in the smallest of ways. Give things that you do not use to the less fortunate or donate food and essentials to a cause near you. Let us help one another in these tough times and show up for our community. As Madiba once said, “a fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dream of”. |
